BE GENTLE:
Be very gentle when you are planting the Sea Buckthorns. The roots of the plants are very fragile and they break easily. Put the ball gently to the hole you have dug. Do not press the root-stock; use only water to help you tighten the soil around the plant.
GROWING HABITAT REQUIREMENTS:
You can plant Sea Buckthorn in to any kind of soil, as long as it is not swamp.
PLANTING:
Plant the Sea Buckthorn approximately 5cm deeper than it was in the pot. Do not make any mounds for your plant.
PLANTING DISTANCE:
The recommended distance between the plants is 2.5meters. The passageway is recommended to be 3.5meters wide.
MALE PLANTS:
Male plants should be planted to the same area as the females. To ensure pollination it is recommended to plant the males above the “spring winds”. There should be at least one male plant per 5-6 females. Male Sea Buckthorn is obligatory.
LAWN PASSAGEWAYS:
Weeding and harrowing might injure the roots of the Sea Buckthorn. It is better to cut the grass with lawn mover frequently. The roots of the Sea Buckthorn grow to a distance of at least 5-6 meters from the trunk.
LIMING:
Liming is often obligatory. Mix lime to the soil before planting (approximately 50kg/are). Also sow 15-20kg of lime to the grass annually. After the third year you can wait for 2-3 years and then start liming again.
FERTILIZATION: Fertilize the plants annually with a general fertilizer.
AT SPRING: At spring it is good to use some nitrogenous fertilizer. You can also use it when planting the Sea Buckthorns.
WATERING: In the planting year it is often necessary to water the plants. Water the plants with approximately 10 day intervals and always use plenty of water.
CUTTING: The plants are cut annually. Cut 2-3cm from the top and from the peaks of the branches. By doing this you control the shape of the plants and ensure that it branches evenly. You can also pinch the branches and tree tops at winter or summer. Keep the plants about two meters tall. The plants grow old after 8-10 seasons and they should be replaced with new ones. It is also recommended to change the habitat.
HARVEST YIELD: The harvest yield depends on the growing habitat. With Sea Buckthorns it is usually 14-25kg per plant. The plants are individuals and the yield varies – sometimes the yield can be a lot bigger.
